Nomi in the Fashion Spot

You’ve heard the expression “To know me, is to love me,” and that’s just what new Vancouver-based fashion label NOMI is all about: love. Inspired by designer and founder Jullianna Smith’s upbringing by a freewheeling mom with hippie tendencies, NOMI seeks to instill individuality in its clothes by inscribing items with influential quotes by notable women.
By mixing these quotes with original sketches drawn by her now-deceased mother, Smith is paying homage to her mother’s individuality while passing on her legacy of self-expression and self-love to all women. NOMI is a blend of her mother’s name, Naomi, and the words “know me,” which she hopes will inspire women to feel beautiful in their own essence.
Sophisticated yet whimsical, the label’s inaugural Spring 2015 collection comprises knitwear and woven tops, tailored pants, blazers and shorts, all using premium, natural materials, locally crafted in New York. Standout pieces include The Jules Blazer ($249), with a quote by Flavia inscribed in the lining and under the collar: “Cut not the wings of your dreams, for they are the heartbeat and the freedom of your soul,” and The Mel Tank($86), which reads: “She moves through life with ease and integrity; whole, complete and perfect.”
NOMI is available online and at select retailers across North America.
